May New Books!

We've got a new display of brand new books that will start your summer off right. You can choose award-winning fiction like Louise Erdrich's The Round House or Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies. If you prefer biography, you can choose from Edythe Scott Bagley's Desert Rose: The Life and Legacy of Coretta Scott King or Alex Danchev's Cezanne: A Life. Maybe you find history fascinating. In that case, we can offer titles like Double Entry: How the Merchants of Venice Created Modern Finance by Jane Gleeson-White or Opium: Reality's Dark Dream by Thomas Dormandy. Faculty Publications and Artwork on Disply in Perry

The Faculty Professional Development Committee in collaboration with the Champlain Library have collected faculty publications as well as artwork from our talented faculty which is now on display on the second floor of Perry Hall. Feel free to check out paintings, scholarly articles, books and book chapters, poems, and illustrated children's books. As part of May Collaborative for faculty there will be an Exhibit, Exchange, Envision Event (E3E) which takes place on Thursday May 2nd in Perry Hall from 2-4. It will be an opportunity for faculty to share food, cocktails, and ideas with one another related to scholarship. Check out some of this faculty work today!

April 18--Meaningful Books!

April 18th — The Meaningful Books of…Laurel Bongiorno

When and where:  1-2:30 p.m., Vista Room, 3^rd floor, Miller Information Commons

Join us as we learn more about some of the books that have made a difference in the life of Professor Laurel Bongiorno—books that she refers to as her “favorite beach reads!”
 
Laurel is recipient of the 2012-2013 Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship Award, and continues to be one of the most engaged faculty members at Champlain. Her doctoral research is in PLAY and she tries to practice what she preaches.  So, in that spirit, for the Meaningful Books Series presentation, she will share favorite beach reads in preparation for your vacation this summer!  And not just a few — she’s a SERIES reader, so there will be stacks of recommendations from Clive Cussler’s “save the world” novels to Sookie Stackhouse’s vampire novels (Book 13 comes out May 7th!) to our own Vermont author, Chris Bojalian –(she just finished reading The Night Strangers).

Refreshments will be served!

New Books, New Venue!

If you've been to the Library lately, you've probably noticed the new look of our new books display. Now all new books are located directly in front of the service desk with everything front and center, convenient for browsing. There are fewer books, but we hope to have more frequent displays to keep everyone up to date on what's coming into our print collection.

This month our display theme is the environment, just in time for Earth Day. There is plenty of food for thought here with titles on the natural landscape, practical ideas for living green, urban agriculture, and the pitfalls of consuming too much "stuff". In addition, we have a smattering of titles in business, art, and fiction to round out the display.

And as if that weren't enough novelty, we'd like to direct you to our new online source for a complete list of the titles on display http://subjectguides.champlain.edu/content.php?pid=455007. This new guide format has allowed us to enrich the basic book information with the addition of cover art. In the future, you will always be able to check this space to see titles from previous displays as well as what's newest in print at the Library. Stayed tuned as the new book lists accumulate and the guide is enriched with content!

About this discussion: In honor of the tercentenary of his birth, Sanford Zale will argue, in five parts — introduction, narration, proofs, refutation, peroration — that the French Enlightenment intellectual Denis Diderot (1713-1784) wanted to be and was our friend, and that we, too, should be his.

* Awards Ceremony – Tuesday, April 16, from 2-3 p.m. – Miller Information Commons, hosted by the Office of International Education and the MIC staff. Photos entered will be on display throughout the month of April.

Prizes will be awarded in 3 categories:
1. People & Culture
2. Landscape & Natural World
3. Architecture

Entrants may submit one photo per category (3 photos)

• Photos are judged on artistic merit and/or how well the photograph captures the culture 
• Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners in each category. ($75, $50 and $25 cash or gift cards)
• Current Champlain College students, staff, and faculty are welcome to enter
