February is Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, the Champlain College Library has created a display of wonderful books - from Maya Angelou to Rosa Parks to Jesse Jackson - come see the great collection of books that celebrate black history.

NEWS: Two new databases!

Two new online resources are now available through the Library website:

“Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries” is the premier source for reviews of academic books, electronic media, and Internet resources of interest to those in higher education. This is one of the primary sources that we use in the library to review new academic books, from which Hanna Bachrach can send reviews in your subject area to you. Now, you can also access Choice Reviews directly if you wish. In addition to browsing or searching for book reviews, if you complete a “Profile” you will receive a monthly newsletter listing the titles reviewed in the new issue that match you've selected. “Underground and Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels” is the first ever scholarly, primary source database focusing on adult comic books and graphic novels. While it may sound funny at first, this database was acquired specifically to support Champlain’s new MFA program, and is a treasure trove for designers specializing in sequential art. Beginning with the first underground comix from the 1960’s to the works of modern sequential artists, this collection will contain more than 75,000 pages of comics and graphic novels, along with 25,000 pages of interviews, criticism, and journal articles that document the continual growth and evolution of this artform.

Other books are more flowery, good for uncorking laughter and relaxation, while others are enduring, to be shared and pored over with friends, explored and appreciated for their complexity. She looks forward to a full-bodied discussion!

DISPLAY: The words of Martin Luther King, Jr

Read the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In support of tonight's reading of "Letter from the Birmingham Jail" sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and featuring Edgar Davis (Monday January 24, 7:00 p.m., Alumni Auditorium), books of Dr. King's writings are on display at the main desk of Miller Information Commons. Learn the power of Dr. King's speeches, letters, and sermons, in his own words.

News: New Catalog Look!

Our catalog got a new look today. The new interface is cleaner and provides more information on the results list. We hope you find searching for books and ebooks even easier now. The following databases are now available in the Champlain Collection, and can be accessed via the library website:

• Biography in Context (InfoTrac)
--A "next-generation online portal" built on a foundation of 600,000+ biographies on more than 500,000 people. Includes the highly regarded Contemporary Authors database.
• Career Transitions (InfoTrac)
--Designed for people in the midst of a career or job change, this product includes resources for discovering, planning and pursuing the next career step: career exploration, resume preparation, tips for finding employment, and more.
• Educator's Reference Complete (InfoTrac)
--Contains more than 1,100 periodicals and 200 reports from the U.S. Department of Education. A resource for any educator - from school teachers and administrators to those studying in the field at the collegiate and graduate level.
• LegalTrac (InfoTrac)
--Provides full-text coverage of major law reviews, legal newspapers, bar association journals and international legal journals offers law students, faculty and legal researchers the publications they need for their research and practicum.
• Opposing Viewpoints in Context (InfoTrac) 
--Provides video, audio streams and podcasts, an image gallery, daily news updates, and interactive maps to accompany the popular Opposing Viewpoints database.
• Powerspeak Languages (InfoTrac)
--Self-paced language instruction in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, German and English for Spanish Speakers. Additional languages will be available in 2011.

These databases, along with many other Gale/InfoTrac resources, are available to Champlain through collaboration with the State of Vermont Department of Libraries, and are supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency,
through the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Vermont Department of Libraries.
